What's a girl to do with 4 lbs. of strawberries?

My oldest and I spent the evening picking strawberries. He had an absolute blast, and considering he ate his weight of berries in the field, I am pretty sure I am going to be elbow deep in red seedy poop this week. It keeps things spicy.

Aside from being blatantly misdressed for any event that involved me crawling around on all fours with my butt in the air...short shorts and flip flops, sweet, I am pretty sure somebody saw my crotch tonight...I was determined to fill our bucket. And, we did. Score.

Clearly, I didn't have any sort of plan past the point of leaving with the strawberries...as now...I don't have a clue about what to do with them. I am strawberry shortcaked out, and haven't the ambition to brew some kind of hillbilly strawberry Boones Farm moon shine.

Let these pictures serve as inspiration, friends. What do I do with my four pounds of strawberries?

Well, I had a strawberry desert one time that was a bit weird, but damn tasty... SO much that I make it at home as often as I can!

~16 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and large berries cut in half

~2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

~1/4 cup white sugar

~1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste

DIRECTIONS

Place strawberries in a bowl. Drizzle vinegar over strawberries, and sprinkle with sugar. Stir gently to combine. Cover, and let sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour but not more than 4 hours. Just before serving, grind pepper over berries.

I don't use the pepper, but my guests who have tried it that way, says it adds zing... let me know if you try it and like it!

This goes well with a Riesling {wink} or over vanilla ice cream!

We're in the strawberry filled poop together my friend. How about strawberry ice cream??

oh that sounds like fun! You should make a strawberry preserve. Kind of a lot of work, but worth it. I am sure you can find a recipe out there. And your kids can help. Farm to table type gig.

Thanks for the help on the horrible sleep habits of Number Two. At least its nice to know that i am not the only one out there!

My husband had the novel idea to freeze them. We can't eat that many strawberries.

Boy those look delicious!

OMG- you really do put your kids on a leash!
You can always freeze some and throw them in with smoothies. My kids love that kind of thing- "Movies."

Your little guy is just cuter than cute!

You make strangers off the Internet treats, that's what you do.

Job well done, and no shots of your crotch. Well, not taken by you that is. :)

I love strawberries. You can use them in making strawberry sirup for ice-cream, jouice or other sweet things, like cookies. You can even serve them with cream. here are some recipes if you dont mind the link in this comment

Charlie...Pepper and strawberries sounds totally weird, but you know what, I have enough of them, so why not! I'll let you know!

Michelle...This whole seedy thing was YOUR idea, not everyone is a canning queen:)

J.Danger...I am leaning towards trying this, thanks! I will report my progress.

Jen...Um...I feel like I should have some sort of clever excuse...but I don't. Yes, my kid wears a leash...but only at public places that he won't sit in the stroller, like the zoo, mall, living room:) Two toddlers are hard for a girl to corral sometimes, and I just didn't want him running out into the road should he not prove cooperative, but he ended up loving it, so the tail was tucked into his monkey backpack:) That's my excuse and I am sticking to it. And I will most definitely be trying out some smoothie recipes, thanks.

Sarah...Jams for everyone!

Grandy...Oh good point, that better not pop up on google images any time soon!

hategan...Strawberry cookies? Now that is a good idea, I must look into this more! Thanks!

Lamb...I KNEW that Ronco Food Dehydrator would come in use for something! This is gonna rock! I can just set it and forget it!

i don't know what you are going to do with all those delish strawberries but i can give you my address if you want to send some my way!

Mix them with yogurt, ice, and lots of Meyer's Dark Jamaican Rum. Blend it up in your Magic (cooking) Bullet. Put the kids to bed. Get out that other magic bullet. Thank me later. :)

Brittany- Seriously, we have that very same monkey leash. Mine aren't as close as your (but pretty close) and I totally get it. I am just giving you a hard time.

My kids actually drag each other around the house in that thing. It is more dangerous that it appears. Beware!

Brittany said...

Kerith...I may just do a mass jam mailing, so watch for that:)

Amy...God I love you,truly.

Jen...HAHAHAHA! I was thinking, DAMN, I knew I should have taken that leash off of him before I took pictures:) I catch a lot of shit for that thing in public, but hey, OUR kids will never run out into traffic or get lost:) Plus he likes to carry things in the backpack part. It reminds me of this old SNL skit of Mike Meyers wearing a harness tied to playground equipment.

Strawberry muffins or bread! Easy as can be. As for the rest just leave within arms reach for the little ones. They'll take care of them no problem!

Um, I can take some off your hands. Those just look too yummy!

Put some in a blender with some yogurt, vanilla ice cream, and some milk (maybe bananas too)and make smooothies!

My daughter would move in with you for these strawberries. She toddles thru the house screaming, "Stwaaabaarree."
She loves them. If you will give me your address, I will ship her up there for a few days to help you get rid of them!
LOL!

Brittany said...

Kandace...not sure how I missed you earlier, but really, freeze them? How did they turn out?

Judy...You make me wish I could bake...And I need to move them outta MY reach, or I'll go through them in no time.

The Mom...I feel so official addressing you like this:) I am going to try smoothies tonight, I am so excited!

Ali...Thanks, and it was a blast! I think we may go again tomorrow with both kiddos:)

Heckno...Sweet Jesus! A blog comment, I may just faint! And I can see SOMEONE is in a romantic mood.

Dejoni...Just next day her over, we'll all eat stwaaabaarrees until we puke:)

You could make strawberry pie with Jello mix...
just kidding.
Bad idea.

Looks like fun and I can definitely say I did not see your crotch that day! ha ha

I totally want to go and do this now. And how is there no one else there? I want to go there! If I tried to take my kids berry picking around here it would be a mob scene.

I am now on to peruse the fine recipes in your comments.

Brittany said...

Emiline...Um, is it pathetic that is my go to pie recipe? I don't bake... so...everything is easier with jello.

Irish...You're a lucky girl, but don't rule out the possibility of a crotch shot, you just never know.

Beth...Well come on over to NW Ohio, and we can pick together, and everyone WAS there, all 8 of us, the entire population of my fine town...we like to all do things together:)

Ooh, those pictures are delicious! I vaguely remember strawberry picking as a child once or twice. Much fun! I would have no clue what to do with so many, though...

I am SO going to email you the best strawberry recipe I just found last week....

Brittany said...

Magies...I know, and even though it was a struggle, we are going back again for more:)

Schwartz...Ok, sorry, those look delish and I will totally be making them this week...but...hand pie sounds dirty:)
